A Few of the Great and Creative Thinkers of Our Time -- Click Here
If you are new to complex world of learning differences and attention
deficit disorders, rest assured that you are not alone.
Widespread misconceptions still exist worldwide about adolescents and
adults who have a learning difference (LD) and/or attention deficit
disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Even in the U.S., which has set the pace on LD/ADD related research,
we are a nation largely under funded and ill prepared to provide the
level of academic instruction and challenge that these students
deserve.
A few of the common misconceptions about LD and ADD/ADHD learners are:
- "There's no way my child could have an LD. He is very intelligent."
Reality: There is no connection between intelligence and a learning
difference. Many of these learners have superior IQ's.
- "My child doesn't have a learning difference or ADD/ADHD. He is
just being lazy."
Reality: While it may be true that your child is being lazy, it may
also be true that he may be bored or overwhelmed in school and needs
an educational change.
- "All students with ADD or ADHD are out of control and severely at risk."
Reality: It depends on the person. It is true that students with
ADD/ADHD are impulsive and can make poor decisions. But it is also
true that students with ADD/ADHD can be well behaved, demonstrate
positive leadership and make positive decisions. At Nawa, we will not
accept a student who's behavior is out of control or severely at risk.
