Self-Development Summer School
The Great Challenge is for students in grades 9-12* seeking adventure
and outdoor challenge while earning academic credit. This is an ideal
opportunity for students with learning differences, attention deficit and time management issues, and those who need to develop greater
social awareness, maturity and responsibility. Students who need to
make up academic credit, improve study habits, are testing limits in
the home, or demonstrating mild impulsive behavior are also
well-suited for this program.
Students who have attended this program often comment that they have
never experienced so much fun and adventure combined with the level of
academic support and encouragement as they experienced at Nawa. Once
they have experienced learning in this context, it becomes difficult
to imagine a summer school back home of lectures, notes, quizzes and
fluorescent lights.
"My son's four-week summer experience gave him a totally different
perspective- he is no longer challenging everything. Instead, he
accepts his learning difference and is applying himself in the
classroom."
- Kim Alsop, parent, 2004
"I attended Nawa for two years, and I had so much fun. The
opportunities and support were endless. Nawa is a family to me now."
- Lyn Sprinkle, Alumna, 1996
